The teenage 24 hour clock, called our circadian rhythm, is set later than an adults. The sleep preparation hormone melatonin does not start to rise until late into the evening. This is why your teenager is not sleepy when you are.
The needs of sleep are also different for Teens when compared to adults. Not only do they need more sleep, 8 to 11 hours with 9 or more being optimal, but their sleep looks different. Their deep sleep stage is much larger than an adults. Deep sleep is where we process are memories of the day, moving memories from short to long term storage. It is also where 'pruning' takes place and our brain development occurs.
